Virtual Collections in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly
The Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (NVSQ), ARNOVA’s official journal, offers special virtual collections that highlight key research areas shaping the nonprofit sector. These curated collections feature scholarship on critical topics such as democratizing philanthropy, volunteering, and nonprofit advocacy, fostering informed conversations among academics and practitioners.
- Editors’ Choice: A Free-to-Read Collection - Joanne Carman & Jaclyn Piatak.
A virtual collection of articles chosen by the editors of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly from each issue of the journal to make permanently free-to-read.
- Democratizing Philanthropy - Lindsey M. McDougle.
This virtual issue of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly showcases research dedicated to the democratization of philanthropy. These articles collectively delve into the transformative endeavors and evolving paradigms that aim to broaden access, participation, and influence in the philanthropic landscape.
- Volunteering: Theoretical Insights and Empirical Research - Ram A. Cnaan, Femida Handy, & Lucas C. P. M. Meijs.
Volunteering, alongside donations, serves as the cornerstone of the nonprofit sector. Without contributions of time, skills, devotion, and resources, many nonprofit activities would cease to exist. Choosing twelve articles that provide the most comprehensive representation of volunteering research from Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly’s vast archives presented a formidable task.
- Contextualizing Advocacy Practices - Heather MacIndoe & Peter Raeymaeckers.
Advocacy constitutes an essential component of nonprofit organizations’ mission to drive social change. The past two decades have seen rapid growth in research on nonprofit advocacy. This virtual issue showcases nonprofit advocacy research in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly.
ARNOVA members can access research, articles, and podcasts through the Member Hub. Simply sign in and click the NVSQ Direct Access quick link at the bottom left of the window.
Important Update: A recent security update in Google Chrome has impacted journal access. We recommend using an alternative browser to ensure uninterrupted access.
The Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (NVSQ) is the leading scholarly publication in nonprofit, philanthropic, and civil society research. Published six times a year, it provides a global forum for timely discussions across disciplines.

Innovation in Governance
National Virtual Dialogues Sponsored by Governance Section
Join the Governance Section sponsored session this fall, “Reimagining Nonprofit Governance for Impact, Equity, and Democracy”: a research to practice national dialogue on alternative and new governance frameworks and models. Due to public demand, the Governance Section is planning this third national dialogue prior to the ARNOVA conference.
Our last dialogue - “The Promise and Perils of AI in Nonprofit Governance: Navigating Power Inequities, Innovation, and Ethics,” with Billie Sandberg from Portland State University and Dottie Schindlinger from the Diligent Institute had close to 75 people register.
The previous one was, “Nonprofit Governance Under Pressure: Executive Orders, Attacks on DEI and Taking Action” with Kelly LeRoux, University of Illinois and ARNOVA board member, and Lisa Weiner-Mahfuz, Executive Director of RoadMap Consulting. With this topic being so timely with the current political situation, 165 people registered!
So please join us for this next dialogue as it is open to all interested in innovation in nonprofit governance. Date to be announced soon!
