The critical perspectives section will be hosting critical scholars at an all day gathering to forge solidarity, assess the landscape, create a context of support for people who engage in critical work or would like to, and provide a space for rest and renewal.
Racial Equity in Non-Profits: Lessons Learned from RMJJ’s Charlotte Model

Summary
McKinsey and Company consultants estimate that the U.S. spends more than $8 billion a year on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training (Dixon-Fyle et al., 2020). Yet, little attention has been paid to the empirical outcomes from DEI training (Dobbin & Kalev, 2018; Gutiérrez et al., 2000; King et al., 2012). This workshop explores the current state of knowledge regarding DEI training. Then, uses the burgeoning empirical literature and local data to acknowledge the importance of knowledge/data, a foundational race analysis that examines root causes and develops a shared language, explicit organizational values and priorities, and institutional organizing for practice change. Lessons learned from the more than a decade of Race Matters for Juvenile Justice are also presented with an emphasis on six dimensions of change. Recommendations gleaned from academic literature and RMJJ's own data can assist participants and stakeholders in implementing more successful DEI training and fostering more equitable decisions and organizations.
